How to prepare for CAT Exam effectively?

Every year more than two lakh candidates appear in CAT exam to be eligible to take admission in any of the top B –Schools. Generally there are 250-850 seats for a batch which are finalized after taking an interview. It means that there is a huge gap which needs lot of hard work and dedication to compete with two lakh candidates. Cut off generally goes very high for IIMs. 

CAT Exam has two sections:

  1. Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation;
  2. Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning
There is sectional time limit for both of them. Each section carries 30 questions to be completed in 70 minutes. There will be on-screen countdown timer which will monitor the time. Once the time of section 1 is over it will switch over to the Section 2 and one cannot go back to the previous one. It is computer based test which will be monitored online by the examining authorities earlier it was in pen and pencil mode.

Although there will be 15 minute tutorial provided for the candidates before the exam starts yet it is important to know how to handle online tests. It can be mastered by practicing online test series while making exam preparations.

In order to make the preparation exam effective one should know the exam pattern which can be studied by going through previous year question papers of CAT Exams.

Let us analyze section wise exam pattern:

Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation;

This section generally covers questions based on DI and LR. DI has a set of data based questions where one needs to apply basic mathematics. If you have interpreted the data accurately then you can crack it correct. Master the understanding skills of the given data by practicing it maximum number of times. It will help you solve the complex questions in a very less time. LR questions are logic based. It only needs presence of mind and nothing else. Read the question carefully and one can reach to the accurate solution to the same.

Steps to master quantitative Section are:

  1. Learn the basics of mathematics by revising the syllabus up to standard 10th of your school.
  2. Understand the exam pattern by going through the latest question papers of CAT.
  3. Solve the mock tests keeping the timer on to master time management as it is section-wise.
  4. Master some short tricks and methods to save your time for the complex questions.
  5. Master the topics which you have understood well. It will help in speed building.

Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning

This section is designed to check the verbal skills of a candidate. If you are good in language and enjoys reading English articles or stories, then one needs to practice regularly.

Steps to improve English Language skills:

  1. Improve the vocabulary skills by making correct use of phrases and words.
  2. Reading Comprehension is one of the lengthy questions. If you practice solving more and more CAT type passages it will help you improve the reading speed and understanding the same. Practice solving the passages before a month of the exam to gain speed and confidence.
  3. Spot the error questions can be cracked accurately if you practice reading articles. It will improve your grammar which is the basic need to solve spot the error questions.
CAT Exam is a mix of easy, moderate and difficult questions. The only need to solve the questions accurately is to learn to identify the questions to reach to the accurate answer. It will help you solve the questions quickly and you will be able to attempt all the questions but mark them correctly.
